On Newer Roads

You had done better
if you had placed
some manner of protective screening
across the blazing lamp
of your desire.

You had done better
if you had closed off
all entrances to the flame
and the shouting glory
of your body.

You had done better
if you had followed
the magnet of moongirldream
along other darknesses
than my need.
But you set high your torch,
you opened wide your mysteries,
you scented the night with fire --
I crawl agonizingly slow, now,
for my frail innocent wings are stubs of char.
